Double-Faced
Meaning
Definition
of double-faced meaning
Based on Oxford Learner’s Pocket Dictionary, Double is twice much, big,
good, etc. “face” is front part of the head, expression on somebody face, surface
or side of something. “meaning” is thing or idea that a word, sentence, etc
represents. Things or ideas that somebody wishes to communicate to you.
Double face meaning is one of word
meaning that has double meaning either element of language system or
recognizable object in the external world.
To understand about
double faced meaning, there are some definition:
Double-faced - marked by deliberate deceptive ness
especially by pretending one set of feelings and acting under the influence of
another.
"she was a
deceitful scheming little thing"- Israel Zangwill; "a double-dealing
double agent"; "a double-faced infernal traitor and schemer".
When
someone tells you one thing, and then tells the opposite to someone else. When
someone does the opposite of what they tell you they will do.
Three preliminary points need to be
clarified In connection with word meaning.
First of all, we shall be concerned
primarily with so – called “ full” word, such as zoo, apple, jump, red, rather
than with empty” items such as of, that, by, which, whose role is mainly to
show the relationship between syntactic unit( though the distinction between
the two is not always clear-cut).
The second, we shall be dealing only
with straightforward descriptive meaning, and ignoring what is sometimes
called” emotive” meaning or “ connotation” for example” the word adolescent
will be taken to mean someone who between childhood and adulthood. We shall be
ignoring the fact that some people use the word to imply that the person
concerned is also likely to be awkward, immature, obstinate, and moody.
The third, we must be aware that
meaning is double- faced. The meaning of a lexical item such as tree must be
considered in two ways: first of all: as one element in language system, whose”
meaning” is dependent on relationships with the other word in the system.
Second, its” meaning” is link up with a certain class of recognizable objects
in the external world[2].
To the linguist, these two aspects
are complementary: he examines first one, then the other, starting with the
internal relationship between linguistics elements.
As with linguistics elements, every
lexical item has its own particular place in the pattern. By studying the
relationship of individual item, a linguist can build up a picture of the
overall structure of language’s vocabulary. When he does this you must forget
that a word such as apple refers to an objectively identifiable object in the outside
world, and must concentrate solely on its relationship with the other items in
the language.

CONCLUSION
Word as one elements of language system,
whose “meaning” is dependent on relationship with the other word in the system.
