CLASSROOM OBSERVATION
CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
A.
Background
Of Study
Since it is accepted as
one of the international languages and being widely spoken for daily communication,
business and academic purpose, English has been vigorously taught in countries around
the world and not to mention Indonesia. Indonesia is one of the countries,
which has put serious concern on the importance of English for communication.
With respect to this, therefore government has a commitment to teaching this
foreign language to all levels of education and keeps developing the teaching
methodology for a great number of reasons for the shaking of goodness of
language teaching quality.
The developing of the education quality
of Indonesia has to do by all of the
components which are to be subsystem in a system of education quality.
The first one and only in developing of education quality
is a teacher factor. In theirselves that the result of teaching will
be determined that is good quality or
not. More than it, without a professional teacher in teaching, it is nonsense
for getting a main goal of the education. Because of it, to fulfill of this
requirement to get the purpose of the education, the teacher has to fulfill the
qualification and ability to be good teacher, one of them is the way to teach
in class
There are so many kinds
of students in class, they come from the other countries, the other village,
different background, and different families. The teachers have to know their
skill first, the teachers have to know theirselves, and their capability before
being their teacher. What will they do to be the best teacher and lecturer? How
if their students can’t understanding their lesson? Then that question always
stays in their mind as a teacher and lecturer. The important thing to be good
teacher or lecturer is they know the manner “how they learn and how they
teach”. There are many methods in this case but in this material, writer will
explain more about classroom
observation. By this problem the writer makes this paper. Then hopefully
will be useful for the readers.
B.
Purpose
Of Study
Writer makes this paper for several purposes,
there are the purposes;
1. To make the classroom observation understood
among the English department students in TEFL Methodology I.
2. To make English department students
know how to implement and practice The Classroom Observation before we are
going to teach English language.
C.
Problem
Identification
Problem identification needs to make this
paper understood easily among the readers of this paper.
1.What is the meaning of Classroom
Observation?
2. What is the aim of Classroom Observation?
3. What is the step in classroom observation?
4. What is the strengths and weaknesses?

DISCUSSION
A.Classroom Observation
Classroom
observation is one of the important things to learn because; classroom is the
main and minimum element in a school or college. Because of a teacher or
lecturer will get a line with students, classroom is the place to build that
relation. What is the meaning of classroom observation? Before we learn about
classroom observation, we have to know about the meaning of classroom and
observation first. Based on the Oxford Learner’s Pocket Dictionary, Classroom
is room in a school in which a class of students is taught. So more explanation
of classroom is a room where students learn and teacher or lecturer teaches
them. How about observation? Based on the Oxford Learner’s Pocket Dictionary Observation
is an activity of watching somebody or something carefully for a period of time
to make a notice about that and have a goal. After we have known about the
definition of each word, then how about the definition of classroom
observation.
Some
experts explain about classroom observation they are H. Douglas Brown from San
Francisco State University (2000:3) tells his classroom is in a private
language school in a metropolitan area in the US. The other opinions said that classroom
observation is a quantitative method of measuring classroom behaviors from
direct observations that specify both the events and behaviors that are to be
observed and how they are to be recorded
With the explanation above it means
that classroom observation is the method in interaction process in a class for
getting a goal itself to improving the quality within it. Classroom observation is very important because
gives the first stimulus from the condition in class to make a good interaction
learning, Because the teacher tries to recognize the students even from
background, ability etc. So make the teacher more easy to choose the method
what will they take.
B. The Aim of Classroom Observation
Every activity have goal, not except
this observation. The important thing in an activity is the purpose, back on
our getting started tells that ho we learn well it becomes reason “why we have
to know the purpose” so we can maximum to teach students, and purpose be the
element of observational system.
There are some purposes of classroom observation:
1.
To know our student’s
skill before.
2.
Built close relation
between teacher and students.
3.
To be a professional
growth among teachers..
4.
The lesson can be accepted
by students well.
C.Steps
In
Classroom Observation
1. Greets
the students
Before the teacher or
lecturer teaches the lesson they always say something for students (some small talk).
It’s has big advantage to make teacher or lecturer more close with the
students.
Example:
‘Good morning students? ‘
‘Have you had your breakfast? ‘
2. Present
list
Calls on individual
students and asks them some question about their live. Student will feel glad
if teacher cares with them, it makes them feel being respected. Example: ‘ how
do you spent your holiday last week ? ‘
3. Brush
up on the material last week
Ask students close their textbook and give
them some questions and example to remembering them about the material.
4. Give
students questions
Chose some students to answer that
question, if students had understand, teacher can continue the next material.
5. Beginning
Explain the new material to students, like
the key words and asks them to open their textbook.
Example: we learn about noun we ask the
function of noun, form of noun and others.
6. Ask
students to make example of that material
Example: teacher asks students to make
example of noun in a sentences.
7. Give
questions foe students
As a teacher we have capability to make
question for our students, every meeting we give students some questions, give
time to do that.
8. Discuss
together
After teacher asks students do their task,
it’s be better discuss it together, share their mind, and give chance students
to ask something that they not understand yet.
9. Time
is over
If the time is over the teacher or
lecturer have to say good bye and wassalam to students.
D.
Strengths
and Weaknesses
Everything has strength and
weakness, not except this observation. As one of method in teaching, classroom
observation has strength there are:1)The teacher has well planning to teach.2)
Make the teacher more innovates in teaching.3)Make using the time efficiently .In
the other hand if the teachers do not have enough in knowledge to face and observes
the student those all are difficult to do. It is the weakness of this material.
CHAPTER III
CONCLUTION
From the explanation
above we can get conclution that is classroom observation is kind of the method
in teaching English as foreign language in interaction process in a class for getting
a goal itself to
improve the quality within it
with the purpose to make easily the student and the teacher for sending and getting
the messages what will they learned. Why we have to know this material
because it is very important thing for beginning class in each teaching for
better teaching. There are some purposes of classroom observation:
1.
To know our student’s skill
before.
2.
Built close relation
between teacher and students.
3.
To be a professional
growth among teachers..
4.
The lesson can be accepted
by students well.
In the other hand this
material has strength and weakness there are :1)The
teacher has well planning to teach.2) Make the teacher more innovates in
teaching.3)Make using the time efficiently .It has weakness that is if the
teacher does not enough in knowledge to face and observes the student those all
are difficult to do.
